Taitas and Mamas
Of the Ecuadorian Andes
Is a long-term and an ongoing project of emblematic mountains, most of them active volcanoes, that run through Ecuador, my home country. Traditionally mountains are considered deities endowed with temperament and have legends that explain how they where formed. Locally they are called "Taita" (father) or "Mama" (mother) depending on their powers. I do not intend to appropriate these meanings, yet I do see myself constantly attracted by a mystical beauty and reverence to these titans, their slopes, valleys and surrounding ecosystems that has captivated naturalists hundreds of years ago and still do today. I can not imagine what the landscape was like then, when Humbold came, but still I feel charmed by their beauty.
